Yup, this traditional food originating from the Indian subcontinent and South Asia is so popular. Apart from being a dessert, gulab jamun is also often served during major holidays such as Eid al-Fitr for Muslims there.

In the Indian subcontinent, milk and cheese solids are made by heating milk over low heat for a long time until the water content evaporates and only milk solids remain. This solid milk is known as khoya. The use of milk as a basic ingredient is inseparable from the belief of the Indian Hindu community that purifies cows, where their milk brings life and fertility.

The modern recipe uses dry or powdered milk instead of khoya or heated liquid milk. It is often garnished with dried nuts such as almonds and cashews to enhance the taste.

History of Gulab Jamun What You Should Know:

Gulab Jamun’s journey for the first time began in medieval India, namely when the Turkish colonizers of Central Asia brought to India. The word “Gulb” comes from the Persian word round and “āb”, which refers to the aromatic rosewater syrup.

There are several versions of the mention of this dish, such as Gulab Jamun in India, Nepal, and Pakistan, then called Rasgulla in central India, Gulab Ki Janu in the Maldives, Bengali version of Pantua Gulch, Jam Golap in Bangladesh, In Rajasthan, Jamun balls are not soaked in. Chinese syrup is cooked with a sauce made from nuts and tomatoes to make a popular rose fruit.

Even though it is called traditional food, making gulab jamun is not that difficult. The milk, which is the main ingredient, is mixed with a little flour, baking powder, Cardamom powder, eggs, and butter, stirring until blended. We use powdered milk. After that, round the dough as big as a ping pong ball. Then fry in hot oil until cooked and brown. When serving, you can pour sugar sauce mixed with ginger and rose water.

Gulab Jamun is a sweet dish shaped like a ball made from milk doused with sweet syrup made from a mixture of sugar water, rose water, and lemon juice. In Hindi, the word Gulab means rose, while Jamun means plum.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup milk powder

  • ½ teaspoon baking powder

  • ¼ teaspoon Cardamom powder

  • 1 tablespoon butter

  • 1 egg, at room temperature

  • 2 tablespoon flour

  • 2 cup water

  • 2 cup sugar

  • 2 teaspoon rosewater

  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice

  • oil for frying

Directions

  • Combine milk powder, baking powder, Cardamom powder, butter, egg, and flour in a medium bowl. Knead and shape the circles. Fry several Jamun at once in hot oil in a saucepan over low heat until they turn golden brown.
  • Meanwhile, in a saucepan, heat the water, add the sugar and lemon juice. Leave it on for 10 minutes or until the water is boiling and the sugar has dissolved completely. After the mixture boils, add rose water, stir, remove from heat and let cool at room temperature.
  • After it cools down a bit, put the fried Jamun in the syrup and let it sit for 15-30 minutes before serving. Make sure the sugar absorbs the vinegar into the Jamun. For best results, let the gulab jamun rest a few hours before eating.

Notes

  • When kneading the Jamun dough, make sure all the circles are smooth without any cracks on the surface.
  • When frying, make sure the color is not too dark so that it doesn’t burn and reduces the authentic taste.
  • If you don’t like it too sweet, you can replace the syrup with healthier honey. Do not immediately soak the fried Jamun in hot syrup. They will wither if you do. Let the syrup cool to room temperature before adding the Jamun.
